While the precise location of Burnbrae distillery is unclear, it could have been sited at Burnbrae Farm in Balfron, Stirlingshire, an early 20th century operation which has long since disappeared.
Could the mysterious lost distillery of Burnbrae have been a neighbour of Kennetpans and Kilbagie?
Alternatively the distillery may well have been situated at a different Burnbrae Farm in Kincardine, Clackmannanshire, near Tulliallan Police College. If this was the location, Burnbrae was close to the 19th century’s Gog and Magog of distilling, Kennetpans and Kilbagie, the two first truly industrial distilleries in Scotland.

If Kincardine was indeed the setting for Burnbrae distillery, its neighbours did little to aid its survival. A licence for Burnbrae distillery was first obtained by James Douglas and Co. in 1816, but the operation closed after just three years.
