Light Bronze. Fruity and fragrant – with a hint of elderflower perhaps.
The flavor is buttery and light. You can almost taste the freshly – made pancakes,
served  with syrup and ice cream. It ‘s very smooth and refreshing, and dances
over the tongue with light touches of pear drops. The finish is beautifully fresh,
long and light.

Antique Gold in colour. Fruity pipe tobacco, underlying old fashioned sweet shop
smell, hard fruit candies. A very fresh whisky for a 29 year old.

Although light and full on the nose, lots more tobacco and heavy tannins on the
taste, also some light spiciness. Not a long finish which definitely leaves you
wanting more.

A distinct 3 season whisky, where the nose, the taste and the finish do not blend
into each other.

This is not just a bottle of 40 year old Highland Malt. It is the result of over 170 years
of tradition and experience of secrets carried and murtered through six generations of
my family here in the heart of Speyside.

Many have wondered at the origins of the unique taste of Glenfarclas. Some believe the
secret lies in the tumbling waters of the Green Burn married  with fresh Highland Air.

Others believe it is our great copper stills which continue to be direct fired and some
believe the secret  is my family’s uncompromising commitment to maturing  Glenfarclas
in the best oak casks in traditional Dunnage warehouses.

Wherever the secret lies we invite you to share in enjoying and savouring  Gl;enfarclas.

John L. S. Grant.

'Orange Oil rubbed on a Wetsuit'.

From the well-known distillery which supplied our first cask, owned by the direct des¬cendants of the man who established it.

This whisky comes from a sherry butt and is the colour of amontillado sherry. It has a lovely nose of toasted breadcrumbs combined with a distinctive nuttiness. Taste it neat, and one instantly recognises rubber wetsuits and wet tyres. Add only a little water and the nose develops with toasted walnuts, hazelnuts and a very pleasant hint of Nutella chocolate spread. The taste is reminiscent of Neroli orange oil, spice and sweet mince¬meat. Very warming.

'Stirs the emotions'.

Way back in 1965 in 'the valley of the green grass', the largest stills in Speyside produ¬ced this spirit.
Since then it has lain in sherry wood and now at last it reaches the glass -amazingly dark with a ruby spark. What a nose! - Sherry and Madeira, macerated black cher¬ries, prunes and caramelized sugar. Water (the choice is yours) adds apple to the mix. The flavors are powerful - black cherries in syrup, treacly sweetness, and a hint of cough mix¬ture developing into characteristic chocolate and coffee. You cannot drink this without having emotions stirred up. Something special from an age of innocence

Strong, Rich oak. A 20 year old copperstill as 105 should be. Big powerful aromas, be wary, it is 60 % vol. A typical Glenfarclas nose with Demerara sugar and figs. The last bit of a Christmas cake. A little drier than the middle but you can get the extra sugar more sweetness in the front of your mouth giving way to bitters sweetness chocolate covered
coffee beans spring to mind. Sweet then melting into bitterness. Lots of fruit and brandy
flavours apparent.

Lovely long finish. The age really coming through here over the strength. Definitely a dram
to savour as the finish will last a very long time.

Conclusion, another great addition to the 105’ family along with the 105 and 105 40 years old.

TASTING  NOTES  GLENFARCLAS  THE  POTSTILL  RESERVE
By George S. Grant:
The colour od dark used copper stills that are 18 ½ years old.
Soft alluring  nose, sweet cotton candy , light honey notes prickling  with fresh fruit
and toffee sauce.
Big rich sherry taste, more sherry on the taste than on the nose.
A real ,outh filling whisky, warmth yet no aggression, gloves, toffee apples and light
chocolate.
A very long finish, lots of power yet so much flavor – a dram that keeps you going back again and again.

John L.S. Grant.

A Family Company for six Generations.

Import klassischer Produkte Hanseatische Weinhandelsgesellschaft, Bremen.

1966 Fino Cask Launch, Spain
J & G Grant are pleased to announce the release of new limited edition 1966 Fino Cask. Intended as the first in a series of 6 special bottlings from the iconic, family owned distillery, only 1444 bottles have been produced from 3 Fino Sherry Casks.

Following the official launch at the bodegas of José y Miguel Martin in Seville (24th September), the Fino Cask has now been released in the UK and will soon be rolled out in key export markets early 2015.

Each bottle is packaged in a black leather box bearing a silver coin which features a portrait of John Grant, George's great, great, great grandfather who purchased the distillery in 1865. It marks the first in a series of 6 different special releases of Glenfarclas, one for each member of the family.

The family are accustomed to using Oloroso casks for maturation, as this is what is believed to best complement the character of their whiskies, however, here the Fino brings out a lighter side to Glenfarclas.

George Grant, Glenfarclas Sales Director says, "With casks this old, it is sometimes difficult to know their exact history. Fortunately my Grandfather always kept meticulous records, so from his diaries we discovered this small parcel of Fino casks that he had purchased from an Edinburgh broker back in the1960s."

A Family Company for six Generations.

J. & G. Grant are delighted to announce the new limited edition 1956 Oloroso Sherry Cask. Intended as the second of the series of six special bottlings from the renownedtic 57 year old whisky.

The 1956 Oloroso Sherry Cask has been matured in twosherry hogshead casks and one sherry butt, producing a total of 660 bottles for the world market. A non-chill filtered bottling at 47.5% ABV, this whisky carries an impressive strength for its age. Due to be launched in the UK this autumn, the 1956 will be rolled out across key international markets over the coming months.

George Grant says "For our second release of this family series, which follows up last year's 1966 Fino Cask, we are proud to go back to our roots of oloroso sherry cask maturation. As promised, this offers a completely different expression to its fino cask predecessor.

It's a real pleasure to introduce the 1956 Oloroso Sherry Cask, considering that the casks we have from the 1950s are the oldest in our warehouses, we wanted to be sure to incorporate a small vatting of these treasured whiskies as part of this special family series".

The bottle is packaged in a similar style to the first edition, making it a recognizable product of the range. It is presented in a black leather box with a silver emblem featuring George Grant, second generation of the Grant family who lived during the time period of 1830-1890. Having recently celebrated the 150th anniversary of family ownership at Glenfarclas earlier this year, the 1956 limited edition marks yet another historic milestone for the Grants much-admired family business.

10 years of The Glenfarclas Family Casks

In 2007 J. & G Grant formally launched “The Family Casks”, an exclusive collection
of 43 vintage dated Single Cask Whiskies ranging from 1952 to 1994.

It was a remarkable achievement at the time for any distillery to have casks bottled
from a continuous run of years and was the only known collection to span 43 years.

The Family Casks are the best single casks from the distillery’s warehouses, bottled
at cask strenght and at natural colour which is displayed perfectly in clear flint bottles.

Ten years later and the range has exeeded all expectations. many expressions have
now sold out or have only a finite number of bottles left, it’s a race against time for
whisky enthousiasts to find their favourite year!
The range has been extented up to and including 2001, there are no more 1952 or
1953 Family Casks remaining, and the most populair is the 1979 release – another
surprise from the colection as this is one of the lightest expressions available !

At the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival George Grant hosts an extremely populair
event open to just 20-30 people, where festival – goers join in the nosing and tasting
process to choose the next Family Cask edition.

This is a unique opportunity tob e able to offer fans, and we are delighted to even see
some familar faces return each year to take part.

Keep an eye out on The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival website to find out if this
golden opportunity will arise again next year.

The latest installment if the collection has been chosen and is almost ready to begin
its bottling process a 2002 first fill Oloroso sherry but, cask number 3770, which is
maturing nicely in one of our dunnage warehouses.

We look forward to launching it later this year.

A resolute adherence to maturation in ex-Sherry casks helps to produce a whisky which is rich, resonant and capable of extremely long ageing, itself aided by a somewhat cool microclimate which limits evaporation losses to 0.05% per annum (against an industry average of 2.5).

Glenfarclas means ‘valley of the green grass’, an indication of the richness of the pasture land which surrounds the distillery. Indeed, the distillery farm ran from the late 1790s until 1988. Like so many of the oldest sites, the farm buildings would have been pressed into service as a site for illicit distillation prior to the 1823 Excise Act. It took a further 13 years for original owner Robert Hay to take out a licence. When Hay died in 1865 his neighbour John Grant bought the distillery for £512. It has remained in his family’s hands ever since.

This continuity has allowed Glenfarclas to still reflect an older way of making whisky, but this willingness to retain tradition is not down to a romantic belief in the past. Glenfarclas is nothing if not a successful business.

As George Grant, 6th generation of the family says: “We have lived through 22 recessions. We make what we can afford to make, and never borrow money to make it.” During the 1980s, as the industry was cutting back on production, Glenfarclas’ was increasing. When an upturn in the market came eventually, it had the stock to sell. A balance between supplying stock for third-party blends and retention of a significant percentage for single malt bottlings has also resulted in Glenfarclas having more significant volumes of aged stocks than most distilleries. An aversion to independent bottlers using the distillery name on their (rare) offerings has also helped maintain a strong brand identity.

The retention of direct fire was done for quality reasons, not to please tourists or malt maniacs. Steam had in fact been tried in 1981, but the conclusion was that the guts went out of the new make spirit, and so direct fire went back in. After all, you need a rich distillate to be able to cope with the tannic structure and rich fruits of ex-Sherry casks.

Today, all the wood is sourced from Jerez cooper Miguel Martin and is a mix of butts and hogsheads, all ex-oloroso and made from European oak. The core range is aged in a mix of first-fill and refill. Tradition doesn’t mean a lack of innovation. Given the depth of stock, the most comprehensive of a single distillery in Scotland, in 2007 the firm released ‘The Family Casks’ – vintage releases from every year between 1952 and 1998. Today, the starting point of the range is 1954, which is no mean achievement.

Glenfarclas also claims to have pioneered the cask-strength bottling, when it launched its 105˚ in 1968, and was one of the first distilleries to open its doors to visitors (in 1973). This, and a long-term belief in single malt (rather than only selling fillings for blends) is now paying off.

In recent years an exportled strategy has seen it expand globally. It now sells in excess of 700,000 bottles annually – and at very keen prices. Glenfarclas, even at 30 years of age, represents some of the best value whisky around. The quality speaks for itself.

LISMORE
SINGLE MALT AND BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY
The Lismore range of Speyside single malts and blends was originally named after the Inner Hebridean island sandwiched between Mull and the mainland. Although two illicit stills have since been found on the island, there is no record of legal whisky distilling ever had taken place.
Created by William Lundie & Co., which came to prominence under the guidance of brothers John and Willie Lundie during the mid-20th century, Lismore is today bottled by Glenfarclas owner J&G Grant using the same recipes handed down by the Lundie family.
Currently Lismore is available as a single malt bottled at a range of ages from NAS through to 21 years old; a blended Scotch bottled at 5, 8, 12 and 18 years of age; Lismore The Legend, a limited edition 21-year-old single malt matured in Sherry hogsheads; and the NAS Lismore Cask Strength.
William Lundie & Co. is silent on the provenance of its Speyside single malt whisky.

The name of Lundie has been synonymous with the business of whisky broking for generations and has trading roots dating back to 1904.
In 1932 Robert (Bobbie) D. Lundie established whisky broker R. D. Lundie & Co. (initially as Lundie & Morrison, a partnership with Stanley P. Morrison), which became the sole UK agent for Macduff single malt, then owned by William Lawson Distillers Ltd.
The business was passed down through the family and a sister company, William Lundie & Co. Ltd, was formed during the 1950s initially as a broker before later turning to blend and bottle the firm’s own blended whisky brands: Lismore and Royal Heritage.

In 2004 William Lundie & Co. was sold to J&G Grant, proprietor of Speyside’s Glenfarclas distillery, which now blends and bottles the Lismore range.

GLENFARCLAS THE FAMILY CASKS
2017
In 2007, family-owned Speyside distillery Glenfarclas launched an ambitious collection of whiskies called The Family Casks: a series of 43 single cask, vintage single malts, spanning five decades. Ten years and hundreds of bottlings later, the venture is going strong.

Glenfarclas The Family Casks
Significant milestones: People have bought Family Cask bottlings to celebrate births, marriages – and even divorces
George Grant didn’t even attend the launch of Glenfarclas The Family Casks in London, back in 2007. He went on holiday instead. ‘I just didn’t think it would be a success,’ he admits.

Then, shortly after the collection was unveiled at a tasting hosted by the Caledonian Club, e recalls. ‘You don’t expect the Japanese to move quite that fast.

‘So I called him up and said it was great, but it seemed like quite a big order. Was this something he thought he’d be doing once a year, or every two or three years? “George-san, you don’t understand,” he said. “This order is for just one bar.”’

Ten years on, the whiskies have sold all over the world, particularly to those celebrating significant birthdays and anniversaries. ‘The year they were born, married, the year their children were born, the year they were divorced,’ says Grant, who represents the sixth generation of Glenfarclas’ owning family. ‘I’ve met some amazing people, and people who bought these whiskies to drink them. After all, these were designed to be opened and drunk.’

Year after year: The range has been tweaked and renewed over the past decade

The concept of The Family Casks was rooted at least partly in indignation, he recalls. ‘Initially it came about because another distillery – I’m sure you can guess who – did a similar range in about 2004/5 and they said: “We’re the only people who can do this range of whiskies.” And we said: “No you’re not!”’

The initial release spanned the years 1952 to 1994: 43 single cask single malts running the full gamut of Glenfarclas. Some surprisingly pale; others treacle-dark and with flavours to match.

Ten years on, the years have changed slightly – there’s no 1952 or 1953 any more, and there are now two whiskies, 2000 and 2001, from the new millennium. There have been more than 380 bottlings as the popularity of the range has spread and casks have been drained.

The most popular year, much to Grant’s surprise, has been 1979, which has been reissued 13 or 14 times. ‘It’s the lightest whisky in the Family Casks range, from a fourth-fill cask,’ he says. ‘Typically Glenfarclas is such a flavoursome whisky, but this appealed to a lot of people in different markets.’

Given cask variation, how easy has it been to maintain that character through so many new bottlings? ‘Very, very easy,’ Grant replies. ‘We only had fourth-fill hoggies from 1979 – no butts, no first-fill.’ Times were tough in the whisky trade back then – and new Sherry casks are expensive.

Other years have been more varied: 1994 was, in Grant’s words, originally a ‘stonking Sherry cask’, but: ‘Every time we’ve redone it, we’ve tried to do something different – second, third, fourth fill. I think we even did a Port cask. It’s nice to offer people something a little different.’

Early scepticism: George Grant missed the launch of the Family Casks back in 2007

If the whisky has changed, so too has the pricing. Nick James, former MD of Pol Roger, Glenfarclas’ UK distributor, reputedly picked up a complete set of the first Family Casks collection for about £6,500. When Grant was offered a similar set recently, the price-tag had risen to £100,000.

‘When we first launched The Family Casks, VAT [in the UK] was 17.5%, then it was 15%, now it’s 20%,’ points out Grant. ‘That’s a chunk of change. Then there’s excise duty. We’ve tried to restrict what’s happening [in terms of price increases] with The Family Casks, but the price of glass has probably doubled in that time. The boxes have trebled – everything has gone up.’

A significant secondary market in collectable whisky has also developed over the past decade – making producers reluctant to keep release prices down when buyers can secure a healthy profit by selling their whisky on within weeks – or even days – of purchase.

‘We’re wanting to appeal to people who buy it and drink it, yes, but there are also people who buy and invest,’ says Grant. ‘Whisky is now deemed as a safe investment. Look at the past 10 years and it outstrips everything – property, oil, you name it.’

These changes are also reflected at the London tasting organised to mark The Family Casks’ 10th birthday. From the Caledonian Club a decade ago we’ve relocated to the basement of trendy Scottish restaurant Mac & Wild in Devonshire Square, in the heart of the Square Mile. The demographic of those tasting has evolved too: more bartenders, more City workers, more elaborate facial hair.

Glenfarclas Family Casks

Big changes: The Family Casks chart the history of both distillery and industry

Whatever their price and whoever’s buying them, The Family Casks offer a living history of Glenfarclas and the broader whisky industry: from the repeal of the 1880 Spirits Act in the 1950s, which effectively doubled production by allowing simultaneous mashing and distillation, through to the whisky loch of the early 1980s to the era of expansion in the 1990s.

‘We’ve had some big changes in the stills themselves in that time,’ says Grant. ‘You can definitely tell when we’re only running four stills or two stills, rather than six. In 1988 we switched to buying all our Sherry casks from Jose Miguel Martin, which made a huge difference. Before that, like everyone else, we just used whatever we could get our hands on.’

The result is a range of whiskies that – even with a distillery that has such a defined character as Glenfarclas – illustrates the huge diversity of single malt. ‘You’ve got first-fill Sherry casks, casks we’ve used four times, so there’s a real range of flavours,’ says Grant. ‘There’s 1979, which is far away from being a Sherried whisky. You may think you know what your customer wants, but quite clearly we don’t. People are always looking for something different.’

But is the venture sustainable? ‘For the time being, yes. We’ve got two years that we can’t replicate, but as you may have seen, we put the prices up for certain years simply to maintain those vintages. But, in the end, things will run out and clearly it’s not sustainable for ever.’

Will the Family Casks still exist in another 10 years’ time? Probably, although it will have evolved again by that time: younger years coming on stream, older ones falling away. There may be gaps. More significantly, when the initiative does finally end, will we ever see its like again?

Glenfarclas 2004 Distillery Exclusive

A second fill sherry butt has been selected by Callum Fraser as this years' Distillery Exclusive for the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival.

This is the first time a distillery manager at J&G Grant has chosen a cask for bottling in over 150 years of production. To mark this special occasion, a select number of bottles have been signed by Callum at random.

80 bottles will be available daily to purchase from our Visitor Centre from 10am on Thursday 3rd May. Sales will be limited to 1 per person and the price will be £120. Unfortunately this will only be sold to visitors of the Glenfarclas Visitor Centre during this time.

‘OLDEST’ GLENFARCLAS RETURNS TO DISTILLERY
May 2018
A 1920 bottle of Glenfarclas single malt whisky, believed to be the oldest unopened bottle in existence, has come home to the distillery nearly a century later.

Glenfarclas 1920
Bygone age: The 1920 bottle was presented to mark the closure of Gartloch distillery
The bottle, labelled ‘Glenfarclas-Glenlivet Pure Malt Whisky’, was presented to the manager of Gartloch distillery, Stephen Dowell, when the North Lanarkshire grain plant closed in 1920.

Dowell gave it to his daughter in 1947, who passed it on to her niece’s husband, Hugh Taylor, in 1988 – after it was found wrapped in a tea towel at the back of a laundry cupboard.

Hugh Taylor kept it until recently, when he contacted Glenfarclas – and the bottle will now become the latest addition to the Ballindalloch distillery’s archive.

Glenfarclas chairman John Grant said he had no doubts about the whisky’s authenticity, thanks to ‘a number of features on the bottle’.

He added: ‘I am delighted to bring this bottle containing whisky from the time of my grandfather back to its spiritual home, and as such add another chapter to our archive.’

The 1920 bottle will be on display at the Glenfarclas visitor centre during this week’s Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, alongside the distillery’s 2018 festival bottling.

The Glenfarclas 2004 single cask single malt, selected by distillery manager Callum Fraser, is priced at £120, with 80 bottles a day available from the distillery from Thursday on a first come, first served basis.

Oldest Known Bottle of Glenfarclas Comes Home

J. & G. Grant were thrilled to welcome home what they believe to be the oldest unopened bottle of Glenfarclas still in existence.  The recently rediscovered bottle is from 1920 – the oldest that we know of, making it a very important addition to the Glenfarclas archive.
On the closure of Gartloch Distillery in 1920, the bottle was presented to its manager Stephen Dowell.  It was kept by Mr Dowell until 1947, then passed to his daughter.  She then passed it to Mr Hugh Taylor, her niece’s husband, back in 1988 – after it was discovered wrapped in a tea towel at the back of the laundry cupboard!  He kept hold of it until recently, when his family contacted Glenfarclas.
The bottle came home during a lunch in April when John Grant was able to inspect it in person for the first time.  A number of features on the bottle meant he had absolutely no doubt about it’s authenticity. In an age when a number of bottles purportedly from that time are turning out to be counterfeit, this one is definitely the real deal. John said “I am delighted to bring this bottle containing whisky from the time of my grandfather back to it’s spiritual home, and as such add another chapter to our archive.”
Visitors to the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival will be able to view the bottle, which will be on display in the Glenfarclas visitor centre alongside the new Festival bottling.  This year’s edition is a 2004 single cask selected by distillery manager Callum Fraser.  From Thursday, 80 bottles per day will be available at the distillery on a first come first served basis.

The chronicle of whisky production at Glenfarclas is as rich and brilliant as the spirit that bears its name. It is the story of the Grants, a canny Scottish family, united, since 1865, in their commitment to John Grant’s vision and founding principle of producing a Single Malt Scotch Whisky of superior quality, in the traditional Speyside style.

In 1836, the distillery, situated on the Recherlich Farm at Ballindalloch, in the heart of Speyside, was granted a Government licence to produce whisky. At this time, the licenced owner was Robert Hay, a tenant farmer. However, after his death both the farm and the distillery were left vacant, which attracted the attention of John Grant. Consequently, on the 8th of June 1865, John Grant acquired the tenancy for the Rechlerich Farm, purchasing the Glenfarclas Distillery for £511.19s.0d. as part of the transaction. Since then, Glenfarclas has been owned and managed by just one family: the Grants of Glenfarclas. Today, the distillery ownership and its whisky production remains firmly in the hands of the fifth and sixth generations of the Grant family.

John Grant died, In 1889, leaving George his son to run both the farm and the distillery. Sadly, George passed away not long afterwards. Subsequently, the licence for the distillery, was passed on to George’s widow Barbara who appointed her two eldest children, John and George, to take care of the business.

In the 1890s, they formed the Glenfarclas-Glenlivet distillery company, with Pattisons of Leith, who held a 50% interest, but this was to prove to be a troublesome partnership – one which eventually was dissolved. John and George were not disheartened by their predicament, forming their own company, J.& G. Grant.

After many years of hard work and shrewd accounting, the future of Glenfarclas had been secured, firmly establishing the Family’s reputation.

A rival distiller, wrote to the Grant family in May, 1912: “Of all the whiskies, malt is king, of all the kings, Glenfarclas reigns supreme “- a sentiment the family still hold close to their hearts. The 1920s saw the retirement of John Grant, but George continued to run the distillery, until in 1948, George Grant passed away, leaving his widow and his two sons to carry on the name of Glenfarclas.

The company achieved continued success during the 1950s, however, the family suffered a great loss when John suddenly died, at the age of thirty-five. His elder brother, George S. Grant took charge of the family business, serving as Chairman and custodian of Glenfarclas for a remarkable 52 years.

His son John L.S. Grant, joined Glenfarclas in 1973, is the current Chairman, having succeeded his father in 2002. He also has a son, George S. Grant, who represents the sixth generation of the Grant family and works as the firm’s Brand Ambassador.

The prestigious Whisky Magazine named Glenfarclas as ‘Distiller of the Year’ in 2006, for ”being consistently good and staying true to its core values.”

Now 200 years since the birth of John Grant, his descendants continue to serve as custodians of the Glenfarclas Distillery, and remain steadfastly committed to the principle of producing superior quality Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky. Like their illustrious forebear, the family use only the finest ingredients, combined with the unique size and shape of the copper pot stills, traditional distillation methods, specially selected oak casks and the style and location of the warehouses that together help determine the final unique character of Glenfarclas whiskies.

Glenfarclas, which translates as ‘valley of the green grass’ is an independent, Speyside, single malt, Scotch whisky produced at the Glenfarclas Distillery in Ballindalloch, Banffshire in Scotland.

GLENFARCLAS REVEALS £100K FAMILY CASK TRUNK
December 2018
Glenfarclas is releasing 50 vintage single cask single malts in a luxury £100,000 trunk, in what’s been deemed the ‘first and last’ chance for fans to taste some of the distillery’s rarest whisky.

The Glenfarclas Family Cask Trunk
Old meets new: The trunk is designed as a modern interpretation of a traditional shipping trunk
Released as part of the Glenfarclas' Family Cask collection, The Glenfarclas Family Cask Trunk contains every vintage made by the Speyside distillery between 1954 and 2003.

Glenfarclas sales director George Grant said: ‘This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy a full collection of vintages in a complete set.

‘It is the first — and last — chance to purchase this, as some vintages contained in the trunk are from the last casks of their respective years.’

The Glenfarclas Family Cask Trunk contains 50 200ml bottles of Glenfarclas single malt, one from each year.

The custom-made trunk also contains four tumblers, four nosing glasses and a water jug, all made by Scottish glass manufacturer Glencairn Crystal.

Portable heritage: The trunk includes a replica of the oldest known painting of Glenfarclas distillery

Also included in the trunk are four slate coasters, three hand-printed and bound leather books with information on the history of the distillery, George Grant’s tasting notes for each vintage, and a book for the buyer’s own tasting notes.

A total of 60 of The Glenfarclas Family Cask Trunks are available globally.

In 2007, family-owned Glenfarclas launched a collection of whiskies called The Family Casks, a series of 43 single cask, vintage single malts spanning five decades.

The next release in the Family Casks series is due to be introduced in spring 2019.

In terms of origin and years on the scene, Glenfarclas 105 has an impressive pedigree. Many decades ago, in the lead up to Christmas, George Grant – the fourth generation Grant at the helm at that time – would bottle a single cask of Glenfarclas at cask-strength and gift it to family, friends, and distillery staff for Christmas each year. These naturally became highly sought-after bottles, and in 1968, George Grant decided to release it commercially for the public and added it to the core range. Bottled at 60% ABV in today’s scale, the strength in the UK’s imperial system at that time was 105o Proof, and hence the name Glenfarclas 105. It has thus been in the distillery’s core range for over 50 years and was, for some years, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s strongest commercial Scotch whisky

Glenfarclas took out its licence to distil in 1844, but there are strong records and evidence of illicit distillation taking place at the farm site for several decades prior to this. It was acquired by its current owners, the Grant family, in 1865. Amongst its many claims to fame, it remains one of the very few, truly independent, family-owned distilleries in Scotland, now in the sixth generation of the Grants. When operating at full capacity, Glenfarclas is capable of producing 3.5M litres of pure alcohol per year

The History

The Batches
Any continually-appearing whisky expression in a distillery’s core-range that is not a once-off or single cask release is, by definition, produced in batches. Whether it’s Glenfarclas 12yo, Glenlivet 12yo, or Aberlour 12yo, the reality is that the Master Blender is required to assemble the requisite number and types of casks several times each year for each production run and must produce a vatting that – hopefully and ideally – tastes the same as the previous one. For the majority of expressions and distilleries, this batch production is an insignificant and invisible process to the consumer, and Glenfarclas 105 is no different.

In their present incarnations and, indeed, for most of their lives, both 105 and a’Bunadh have been No Age Statement whiskies. But both expressions have, at times, carried age statements for special releases or for certain markets.

WM LUNDIE & COMPANY
William Lundie & Co Ltd offers a broad range of blended, single malt and blended malt Scotches under the Lismore brand, principally for export markets. The brand is named after a small island off the west coast of Scotland, and the identity of the single malts used in the various expressions of Lismore are not disclosed.

Members of the Lundie family have had a long involvement with the Scotch whisky industry, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that brothers John and Willie Lundie established the brokerage firm of William Lundie & Co.

As the business of brokering became progressively less lucrative – thanks to greater consolidation of distillery ownership into ever fewer international hands – the Lundies began to concentrate on cased goods and export markets, particularly after John and Willie retired in the early 1980s.

For a time, the company also acted as sole UK agent for Macduff Highland Malt, owned by William Lawson Distillers. Bruce and Alan Lundie took over the business from their fathers, but when Bruce retired in 2004, J&G Grant acquired the cased goods operation of William Lundie & Sons, which it currently operates from its offices in Ballindalloch, Moray.
