Japan's Legendary Smallest Distillery
The original Karuizawa Whisky Distillery, which sat just outside of Karuizawa, in the neighbouring town of Miyota, was sadly mothballed in 2000, with the 'silent period' of the late 1980s and early '90s leaving them struggling to continue distilling due to a lack of local and global demand for Japanese whisky.
However the owners decided to mothball the distillery in 2000 and by 2011 all of the original equipment had been sold on. By 2016 the distillery had been completely demolished.

Sweet and darkly beguiling
Sweet and darkly beguiling, the nose delivers sugary espresso, molasses, honeyed figs, flapjacks, blackjacks, dark chocolate and hickory – smoked ribs – also eucalyptus and penil shavings.
The mouth – watering, tooth – squeaking palate has tarry tobacco, garibaldis, orange peel, balsamic glaza, old leather and glowing embers.
